NAXOS - SOMETHING TO DO FOR EVERYONE

Every person likes to spend their holidays in a different way. You might prefer hiking in the mountains, other person lying on the beach or visiting museums.
Naxos offers something for everyone.

The whole island is full of incredible beaches with clear and turquoise water, lovely tavernas with great food and picturesque little mountain villages.
There is a lot of history, the island has more than 500 churches, a temple and museums.

Taking advantage of having a car with us, we left every morning and made a trip to a different part
of the island. On the way we popped in a village bakery and bought  some lovely tasty pie or cake.

For people like me who don´t like package holidays with all inclusive, this is an ideal
place. No crowded beaches, no high hotels around. The connection with nature is incredible.

Sometimes we got hungry while we were swimming, so we decided to  have a tasty lunch in tavernas
with view of the sea, offering fresh fish and seafood. In the Czech Republic I hardly
ever eat chips but Naxos is well known for best potatoes and their local chips are incredible.

In case you prefer mountains you will feel like in paradise as well. At the top of the hills, you will be rewarded by amazing view and you can also find a tiny church with opened door.

In case you love culture and history, don´t forget to visit some of the nice museums.
While you are in old town, walk to the Archaeological Museum of Naxos and don´t hesitate to get in.

The museum includes works of art and objects of every day use dating from the Late Neolithic period to the Early Christian times (5300 BC - 5th century AD).

The archaeological collections of the Museum include artefacts, many of them are unique.  There are also some very fine collections of Mycenaean (late 2nd millennium BC) and Geometric (9th - 8th centuries BC) pottery.

To see more, just jump into a car and drive to see the Temple of Demeter. It is located near the village of Sangri. It was my favourite trip that day, even through it was very hot.

Even more interesting than what is left from the temple is a small free museum just four minutes of walk but hidden away, so many people don´t even know about it.
We asked the local lady sitting inside why there is not entry fee and some signs to point to the museum. Apparently they are short of money. What a shame, the place deserves much more attention.

While in Naxos, make sure you see at least one of the Kouroi. First of all I will show you Kouros of Apollonas, also called Colossus of Dionysus, 10.7 metre tall unfinished staue of man, made of Naxian marble.

It is located in an ancient quarry near Apollonas.

For me even more impressive was Kouros of Flerio, 4.7 metre long statue of white Naxian marble , located in a village garden in Melanes.

On the way up or down, you will also find Melanes Kouros, 6 metres long, dating back to 7th century.

This is my basic guide to this incredible island. I am so happy I had the opportunity to visit such a lovely place and it will stay in my memories forever.

It was very hard to leave. These are our last moments before our ferry arrived.
