FROM ATHENS TO NAXOS

It is Summer 2017 and this is my 4th journey to Athens. Finally I have my vacations, I took two weeks off and decided to spend them in Greece.  I have a very strong connection to this city and everytime I land at the Athens airport I have a strange warm  feeling in my body and I know, the next days are going to be really great.




Because the airport in Brno is very small and there are not many flights, the best way is to fly from Bratislava or Vienna.  You can also go to Prague and fly from there but this is not the best option. 
The flight takes less than two hours. We decided to take a fast train and fly from Bratislava.



After landing just before midnight we went to sleep quite soon and we slept really well. The great thing about Greece is,  the most people have window shutters and it is so dark in the room even at 10 am. 
The plan for the next day was to find out how we can get from Athens to one of the Cyclades Island called NAXOS. 
There are two ports you can take the ferry from, Piraeus and Rafina.  After checking the time tables and prices, we chose to go from Rafina. It takes between 25 min to 1 hour from Athens to Rafina, it depends on traffic. The price for return ticket from Rafna to Naxos for two adults and one car was 230 euro.









Our journey took about 5 hours and we stopped on different islands - Tinos, Mikonos and Paros, so other passengers who chose to spend their vacations there could get off.  It was a good opportunity for us to go up and take some pictures of each island and other ferries.



While arriving in Naxos,  we were welcomed by Portara, the doorway to the ancient Temple of Apollo which was built in 522 BC and never finished.
                                         




Because of the long journey,  first of all we decided to find our accommodation , which we booked already in Athens. It took a few phone calls but we managed to find a nice place for decent price. It was in a village called Ag. Anna with amazing beaches around. 
 

The room was freshly decorated and clean with air condition and make-up table. While sitting on the balcony we could enjoy the view of the sea and also cows and donkey.
The first days of our stay were very windy so I couldn´t  wear my hut and we were also struggling a bit with our beach umbrella.  But it didn´t  stop us and we started to explore the closest beaches, drinking Freddo cappuccino  and later on had something to eat.

                                                   






While eating lovely food we were planning our next day trip to the old town called Chora.

I heard a few people saying that Heraklion is an ugly town. But for me it wasn´t ugly at all. The only thing I didn´t like was the amount of cars and motorbikes everywhere as they were too noisy. Fortunately our hotel located close to the centre had good double glazing and in our room we didn´t hear anything from outside.   Heraklion is the largest city of Crete and the island´s capital. Its history begins in post-Minoan times. It is a modern, lively town and important economic centre with many cute tavernas serving amazing food. And on top of all that, I could finally visit Nikos Kazantzakis grave memorial.   He is considered one of the most important greek writers of all times and is best remembered for his book Life and Time of Alexis Zorbas ( Zorba the Greek ). Before I left Crete, I bought one of his books - Report to Greco , which I carry with me when I travel and read on the plane. CRETE - RETHYMNO

Crete, the huge, beautiful island and only full four days. With five weeks of holidays per year you can´t  make miracles, but here we are and going to use and enjoy every minute of this picturesque place.  After visiting Knossos and Agios Nikolaos there were two options for our next excursion  - Rethymno or Chania. But because of long drive from Heraklion and not having enough  time, the decision was clear, lets see Rethymno. (Chania is still on my list :-) ) We parked our car cca 1 km away and had a nice walk towards the town. It was November, about 19 degrees that day and you could still see people swimming.  I am a palm tree lover and this place was full of them. In order to spend some time and having this lovely view, we decided to take a short break, sit down and drink a cold coffee. CRETE - KNOSSOS

Crete´s greatest attraction is indisputably Knossos, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete located just 5 km outside Heraklion.  The most interesting ruins are the reconstructed palace and the regions round it, including the Propulaea, the long passageways, the strorehouses, porches and courtyards.  The entry fee was 8 euro and you can walk around as long as you want. I love to feel the atmospere and imagine who lived here many years ago. It is believed that the first palace complex of Knossos was probably built in the 19th century BC and was destroyed in the 17 th BC in a remarkable, functional way. The Palace of Minos included the magnificant pillared sets of stairs, the maize of rooms, and the throne-room of the oldest great kingdoms of Europe.  To be here in November was actually great, it was warm but not too hot, the temperature in Summer can be about 40 degrees at this place.
